Hard Question
When someone is down and out
Comes asking me for a handout,
Must I respond with cheerfulness,
Trusting that my handout will bless?
The Bible says it short and sweet
Those who will not work will not eat.
Families should care for their own,
In Bible times was quite well know.
On the other hand, I am told,
Give to the poor and don’t withhold.
As myself my neighbor to love,
To do this, I need help from above.
Remember the Good Samaritan;
Also the Prodigal Son.
Faith without works is dead, I’m told.
Charity I must not withhold.
Everything I have comes from God
A steward to spread goodwill abroad.
Some lack through no fault of their own.
To them, charity should be shown.
Jesus showed discretion is allowed,
When he sent away a greedy crowd.
I cannot give to all who ask.
What is the answer to this task?
The needs God lays upon my heart
Is a very good place to start.
God will help me know what is best,
How to respond to each request.
