Coxsackie is quite a mouth full; no, it is not an item on a Japanese restaurant menu. Wrong again, if you are guessing it is a karate yell. Childcare workers dread the diagnosis; coxsackie is a contagious virus that makes life miserable for all those exposed. The common term is foot and mouth disease. OOPS, wrong again; not only cows get that!
Symptoms vary; often sufferers complain of open sores in the mouth and on soles of feet. Both children and adults are susceptible to the virus and carriers spread it among those in their midst. The alarm sounds; "Coxsackie! All to your battle stations, you know what you need to do! Sanitize everything you see; chlorine bleach is your most powerful weapon!"
Children hate to make the sacrifice of giving up favorite soft blankies and stuffed animals. Snuggle items offer comfort and security. I have been a caregiver and I know the truth: warm and fuzzy= breeding ground for coxsackie! Gather all washables; launder, disinfect and place inside sealed plastic bags in a baby-proof area. This too will pass. Yeah, sure…. coxsackie only goes into hiding like bugs during winter. Coxsackie, you will one day meet your match. Antibacterial agents step aside; anticoxsackie will be a regular purchase for daycare centers!
