Overwhelmed with emotion, Sophia caressed the hand of her baby granddaughter and namesake. The weight of her parents’ legacy, and the knowledge that she alone must impart it to this newly orphaned babe, was more than she could handle.
A few years passed and Sophia found herself waving to little Sophia as she ran to her kindergarten teacher. Finally, she had hope that someone else could help her do the job at which she was surely failing. Thankfully, her granddaughter was already showing signs of brightness and maturity that could only be attributed to her parents’ genes, but she would still miss so much being raised by her grandmother instead of her parents.
A few more years and Sophia faced her greatest fear: the teenage years. Of course, she truly had no reason to be concerned as little Sophia had given no hints of rebellion, and she generally erred on the side of obedience. Still...it would be better if her father were there to give her the discipline and restrictions she needed so she could learn how to stay far away from the evil one. How could a grandmother truly understand the pressures young people face these days?
The years passed too quickly. Sophia stared at the stage as her little Sophia received her diploma. They had both survived the teenage years with flying colors, and now that old fear had been replaced. She was saddened to think her sweet granddaughter would have to face the college years alone. It was evident that little Sophia had her mother’s independent spirit and strong constitution, but was that enough? What if she needed someone to talk to or hold her during the hard times?
Only a few more years and Sophia looked into the eyes of her granddaughter seated next to the hospital bed. She knew this day would come, yet she still felt like she was letting down little Sophia’s parents. First, she wasn’t able to raise Sophia the way they would have wanted, and now she was abandoning her. How she wished she could have lived up to the legacy Sophia’s parents’ had left behind.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Sophia caressed the hand of her dying grandmother. The weight of her legacy, and the knowledge that she alone must impart it to future generations, was heavy on her heart. Yet, it was a challenge she gladly accepted.
