I’m still a little leery of it, but I’ll take my chances. If someone had showed up at my door thirty years ago with this contraption I’d of called the law. But not before getting down on my knees to pray. Us old folks didn’t grow up in a high-tech world and it’s mighty scary sometimes.

It all started when Janice took that class down at the senior citizen place. I told her we didn’t even have a computer but she went anyway. I think sometimes she just wanted to get away from me. I was always underfoot after I retired. She went to the class and came home all excited telling me stories that might as well have been in Japanese.

Well, the next thing I knew she asked for a computer. We were on a fixed income, so I had no choice but to say no. Things died down and Janice started going to the library so she wouldn’t lose her skills. Then Christmas came around and our kids came to visit. They came in carrying some big boxes labeled “To Mom and Dad”. I got the short end of the stick and a computer for Christmas.

I complained for a while but I don’t think Janice could hear me over all her clicking. I steered clear of her desk until one day I heard a child laughing. I thought maybe one of the neighbor kids came over until I saw Janice at her desk and our granddaughter looking back at her. She was moving and talking and laughing, just like someone on TV.

“What in creation?” I asked.

“It’s Skype,” Janice answered. “Shh, she’s showing me her new dance routine.”

Well, I sure didn’t know what that meant but I really didn’t care. Anything that let me see my grandkids more often was fine in my book. I started wondering why we didn’t get it sooner. We bought another chair so I could see the kids too. We loved to see them smiling and playing, it was almost like being there.

I don’t know what I would do without my computer now. Yes, like everything else now it’s just mine. Janice is gone and I’m lonely. But it sure brightens my day to see my grandkids.

The only thing that would be better is for Janice to have Skype in heaven and I could see her too.

What a touching story. I could really relate to the MC. There have been times where I wished there was Skype in heaven as well. (Maybe not Skype, but a way to see my mom)You did a good job showing the transition and change in the MC.

What a joy this was to read. This piece was very touching, and amusing, and I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time.

Great story! I'm a grandparent who has her grandbabies close by but lots of folks at church use Skype to regularly visit with their grandchildren. Congrats on your story's recognition. Enjoy!
