Somewhere in muggy Mississippi, I was frantically searching for necessary items that I would need for my very first mission trip to a foreign continent. There were so many things to acquire and accomplish before my departure. Shots for my survival in the rain forest, luggage that would endure the twenty-four hour flight, clothing and food that were suitable for the two week venture, were only a part of the list.
Somewhere in northern New Jersey, a small and insignificant piece of paper was undergoing extensive treatment to become the perfect presentation. Actually, it was making its merry way through the printing press only to be used to announce and identify the hidden chocolate dessert concealed within its wrappings.
Somewhere in the thick grassy undergrowth of an African rain forest, not far from the Cameroon border, a small mother rodent was nurturing her small unsightly brood. Though small and insignificant, one of the rapidly growing rodents was preparing itself for the acquaintance that only these African creatures could dream of.
I had finally finished my list, packed my luggage and headed for the airport. I boarded a small plane in Jackson, Ms and made a short bumpy flight to Dallas. However, the flight on to Houston was a much smoother ride. After a long wait in Houston, I boarded Air France for a long night of flying only to enjoy an afternoon of jetlag in the beautiful city of Paris. As the night crept into Paris I watched the city shrink behind me from my comfortable 747 window seat on a long flight to Angola, then on to Congo.
Someone who was traveling with the same mission team had made their way along the candy aisle in their local Walmart and was swept away by the tempting print on the small insignificant piece of paper that proudly announced its hidden contents, SNICKERS! Not being able to resist its temptation, they grabbed the candy and headed for the checkout. Soon the little piece of paper and it’s content was hidden deep within the luggage department of the Air France 747.
By now the mother rodent has done all she is going to do with her now grown brood. She sends them packing into the rain forest. One small little fellow, who has yet to acquire a name, scurries around searching for survival. Crowded out by all his siblings, he is forced to hunt higher ground. Although the noises are strange and the creatures are much larger, he senses exciting things in his new home in the small yet crowded African village.
From where I sat near the window of the big 747 it appears the pilot is landing on a sidewalk. Soon I learn we are approaching our final destination at the Brazzaville, Congo airport! I couldn’t believe my eyes! My driveway was almost as large as this runway! And what were those black dots moving around the runway? As we neared the ground I was in total shock! African children were running along the runway waving at the crowd peering from the giant bird that was landing on their soil. It was like Santa’s reception at the local Christmas parade! I was in total shock!
Soon the “SNICKERS” paper and it delicious contents that were hiding deep within the American luggage was now riding in the same African jeep caravan that I had boarded for the village. Eight long hours and unbelievable sights and smells later, the mission team unloaded our luggage and pressed through the crowd of excited Africans to our humble “Gilligan’s Island” huts on the edge of the rain forest.
The little un-named African mouse now darts between the feet of a noisy crowd in the small village. His heart beats rapidly as he searches for a secret place to hide.
I unpack my mosquito net, hang it from the bamboo beam and tuck it in around the foam mattress. Wearily, I crawl into bed with my flashlight close by, praying for a good and safe nights sleep.
Someone somewhere has now ripped the wrapping and devoured the now imported Snickers, tossing the insignificant paper to the side.
Suddenly I am awaken! I hear a frightening noise in the dark! I quickly grab my light and begin the search from my protected cot! Scanning the dirt floor with my light, three worlds collide as my eyes catch the guilty little eyes of an unnamed mouse with an insignificant piece of paper.
