My mother called this afternoon. She wants some help with getting photos in the right order for a scrapbooking project. I promised her I’d come tomorrow, but tonight I needed to get an article written.
I’m learning that the most challenging thing for a busy writer is to write.
There are a dozen things to do when my computer starts up. Check email. Update my fitness log. Pay bills online. As soon as I finish that, I will have some uninterrupted time for writing.
Getting ready to write – to actually put words on the page, is another matter. After doing all of the little chores mentioned above, that will only take a few minutes, but add up to at least half an hour, often more, I’m ready to focus on the writing.
Where do I start?
A title would be good – it provides focus. Or do I need a thesis statement first? I had a great idea while I was doing the shopping. I hope I can remember what I was thinking enough to get the words down.
Okay, now I’m ready to write this article. I have a title, and a direction to go. I have a few sentences and thoughts formed in my mind – all I have to do is arrange them on the page so they are interesting for my reader.
I think I’ll take a short break, get some tea, while this idea brews a bit…..
Well, break’s over. Since I was already up, I moved the laundry from the washer to the dryer. And swept the kitchen floor. It’s tiny, so it doesn’t take much time.
Now I’m back on track, and the article is shaping up nicely. I think an illustration would work well here – let’s see if I can find something suitable. Or maybe a quote. I’ll check online for a suitable quotation….
So far, I haven’t found the perfect quote, but it’s getting late. I’d better get some rest so I can do my job tomorrow. This article will have to wait. It’s nearly done. I should be able to finish it tomorrow night.
After I help Mother with her scrapbooking.
