I would set about straight away to
find me an old two-storied building
full of staircases that go up and down
and down and up all the way
from beginning to end.
I would fill the rooms with bookcases
that run from one end to another end.
From beginning and back again.
And then fill the cases with nursery rhymes,
Poet’s climes, Plays of the Bard or of the Park
Casey’s Bat, Dick Whittington’s Cat,
Father Brown’s hat and Paul Bunyan’s axe.
There would be mysteries to resolve.
Romances to swoon and cry for.
And History to relive and die for.
There would be astronomy, physics
And geometric blizzards.
Not to be forgettin’ starry nights,
free-floating kites
As well as endless flights of fantasy.
There would be armchairs –
deep and cushiony.
Rocking chairs rainbow hued
Or alternately ebony
Windows opened up to reveal
An upper storied balcony.
The final decorative effort would be
the sign—richly tinted and
sporting silver filigree
