In a humble office sat a writer/editor at his desk pouring over a manuscript. Crumpled papers lay all around him. His secretary enters.
“Sir what is all this?” She cries picking up the papers and putting them in the recycle bin.
“It’s the characters in my latest work. They’ve taken off in directions I didn’t intend. I’ve been trying to resolve the issues of the mess they made.”
“But sir, this manuscript is due in a few hours. Tell me again why you insist on doing your own editing and galley proofing and correspondence? I don’t know if you’re going to make the deadline this time.”
“Oh, ye of little faith. I shall meet my deadline and as for why I do it all—because I can.”
With those words the writer/editor waved off his secretary and got back to work. He worked late into the night putting in place the things his main character would need to find to help her along the way. He knew he couldn’t change what the other characters did but he could give her the strength and courage she needed. He could keep her sensitive to his original plotline. Finally satisfied he summoned his secretary.
“I told you I’d finish on time. Here you go, all ready to be delivered.”
April 3, 1967 Santa Ana Hospital
Doctors gasped at the hole in the little girl’s lip and palette. But the writer/editor didn’t. The cleft was part of the original storyline. As the little girl grew she struggled but never wandered far from the plotline.
June 2, 2010 Editor’s Office
Back in his office the writer/editor smiled at how his work turned out.
“Why so happy, sir?” His secretary asks as she enters.
“I was just thinking about that work of poetry you didn’t think I’d finish on time all those years ago.”
“Yes, I remember. I’ve been watching your work unfold and I must say I don’t like all that happens but I understand. You couldn’t be you without your signature style.”
“It’s called free will.”
“Yes, it’s in everything you author even though it’s complicated quite a few pieces of work.”
“Complicated some yes. But in this case it’s a compliment to all I strive to be. My poem is encouraging others and writes about her struggles, giving me the glory still.”
“As it should be sir.”

When referring to the mouth, palate is the preferred spelling. Thanks again for your writing.
I have a feeling the Author/Editor never wastes anything so I guess He started the whole recycling thing. It's the characters He created that took awhile to catch on to the trend. ;-)
