Do others read all authors with critique in mind?
Does everyone evaluate each written line
To test the sound it makes?
Or is this just a “blessing” of a unique kind -
A gift to those who write for their own sake.
We love an image in a novel written well;
We’ll copy it or show it to a friend,
“It’s crazy how this guy can write!”
And equally a metaphor can work a spell
That fills a quiet moment with special light.
We must choose each word carefully or not at all.
We use them like a painter uses paint
To show what’s on his mind.
To give right voice to what we think and feel
Provides a satisfaction of the purest kind.
But is the gift a blessing or a curse?
To not express our thoughts quite right –
A problem that can fill an afternoon.
It can be either best, or very worst
When time is tight and that next deadline looms.
Oh writer’s block, oh silent muse,
Oh sweet inspired thought
That shows up just in time.
This writer’s life, with much to lose
And more to gain – I want to make it mine!
