Who had no time to sit in schools
But farmed Kentucky's rolling green hills,
Acquiring skill with plows and tools.
Tom cherished freedom, believing in God,
Condemning slavery's captive greed.
Young Abraham was taught how to farm
And had no time by day to read.
But God was planning the future of Abe,
Made him thirst to feed his soul
And often at night by the candlelight
He read in its feeble, flickering glow.
Soon books became the love of the lad,
Both honest and forthright was he.
When justice was born in his scholarly mind,
He'd fight for the right to be free.
When he traded his early books at last
For the cumbersome books of the law,
He learned to debate with the champions of hate
In arguments made without flaw.
Abe ran for office, he tried and tried
And wouldn't accept defeat.
Belief in freedom kept driving him on
When he lost the Senate seat.
'Til up from his humble past he sprang
To the foremost post in the land.
No college grad, but this gentleman had
A life his Creator had planned.
"We hold these thruths..." was the speech that he made
One day in Gettysburg town,
Poetic speech that would lift and inspire
And win him a place of renown.
“Dictator” yelled the Democrats now,
His critics were strong and oppressive.
They didn’t approve of his freeing the slaves,
His tactics too bold and aggressive.
But he freed the slaves at the end of a war,
With the bloodshed exceedingly great.
He brooded and mourned for the souls that were lost
And his own early death was his fate.
Born into poverty, tilling the land,
Fighting for all to be freed,
Where would we be if this God-fearing man
Never had learned how to read?

Thee poem kept my attention, and I can be childish with my focus. Bravo!
