As I rock my granddaughter, I find myself saying “ssh” as though that will quieten everything around us so she can sleep. Nothing but the sound of the chair rocking and the sound of her sweet breathing as she sleeps is such a peaceful moment. I think back to a time when I remember my mother putting her index finger to her mouth and whispering “ssh” to my brothers and me. It might have been when a baby was napping, or when she needed to hear something. I remember all too well her hushing us during church and we didn't even dare to utter a sound. After I became a mother, I found myself doing the same thing to my children. The amazing thing is that when someone does say “ssh”, it is immediately understood by those hearing it. I wonder how often God wants to say “ssh” to his children in hopes of getting a message across. When all is quiet around me it is so much easier to hear God's still small voice speaking to me, leading me in the path that I should go. I hope and pray that in life's busy days ahead, I will still know when it's time to stop and listen and know that God has whispered “ssh” to me.
