Writing about colors is not my cup of tea
But I just get the urge to write
Suddenly I got the fever
Very late in the middle of the night
When I think of the color yellow
Hatred stirs my bones
It makes my freckles pop and crack
Paints my red hair with an orange tone
What good can come from the color yellow?
I’m sorry if you don’t agree
But me and yellow don’t go together
Kinda like Kennedy and Rockefeller
I bout fell out of my seat
When suddenly my mind went click
Scenes from another time took over
I am not kidding one bit
Yellow ribbons floated everywhere
All over this little page
I saw their names right in the middle
Soldiers of the USA
Johnny left in January
Then James was on his way
Their flights flew out at half past noon
My own little girl named Susan
Set sail in the middle of June
My memories floated backward
A year or two or three
Right to the heart of the matter
A yellow ribbon in every tree
Bright colored silk in every yard
Mine was the largest one
The silk twirled round my fingers
As I ran for the staple gun
Yellow ribbons all over town
For thousands of girls and boys
Tied around those big tall trees
Praying them back from the war
My Susan had a prayer warrior
Mommy was her name
Until Susan came back home
Her mom would never be the same
One summer day Susan called
Said, “Mom, I’m coming home.”
The major says that I need care
I am not allowed to be alone
I met Susan at the air port
Hugged her really close
Her injuries were of a special kind
The kind you can’t diagnose
Six months down the road
With special care and special prayer
I looked her in the eyes one day
And I knew that she was there
I praise God that he answers prayer
I trust him more and more
I know that he heals everything
Even the scars that are caused by war
A lesson I did learn
While constructing this lttle poem
Everything is not about me
Never was and never will be
AND
I’ll be the first to admit
I don’t expect a gold medal
For this poem that I have writ
It won’t place in the number that counts
But I fell in love with the color yellow
That’s what it’s all about
