Recent reports tell about people finding very rare and valuable purple pearls while dining on clams. We expect to find pearls in oysters, not in clams!
Jesus talked about a pearl of great value in one of his parables. He says that the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for pearls. When he finds one of great value he goes and sells everything he has in order to buy it. This parable challenges me to ask myself whether I value God’s kingdom in my life so highly. Is there anything I haven’t been willing to let go of in order to have God’s kingdom rule in my life?
Jesus also taught that the kingdom of heaven is within us. Not something that we can touch or that can be found by physical search. Yet, so often, when the world searches for God we go to physical structures, a church building, a synagogue, or a mosque.
When the world goes looking for pearls we look in oysters. Yes, many pearls are in oysters, but the pearl that holds greatest value, the purple pearl, is found only in a clam. The pearl that holds greatest value, the kingdom of heaven, is found only in people.
Finding the kingdom of heaven in such an unexpected place, and in unexpected people, is like finding the purple pearl in the clam.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me your eyes to see your heavenly kingdom in this day-to-day world that I live in. If I value something more highly in this life than your kingdom I know you will be faithful to show it to me. Your presence is precious to me. I don’t want to let anything interfere with your presence in my life. Amen.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.” Matthew 33:6a (NIV)
