"Will you marry me"? Alexandra could hardly believe her ears. Time came to a standstill in reverence of the magical moment. "Alex. Did you hear me?" His eyes burned through her with an intensity she could not deny. "Yes. Sorry. Yes, of course"! A sob escaped from her throat and she threw her arms around his neck. His body relaxed in relief as he gently pulled her back and tenderly slipped a ring with the most incredible diamond she had ever seen onto her finger. "Phillip..I...this is too much. I couldn't possibly wear this." His smile reached all the way to his eyes in delight "I thought you might say that, but since it's been in the family for a hundred years, you or I don't really have much of a choice." The diamond was a 6 karat emerald cut that had two large amathyst jewels on either side of it. She stare down at the ring in awe. "I know what you're thinking sweetheart. The purple stones happen to be amathyst, and they represent our royalty, so they must be worn." He angled his head to get a better look at her. "I know, but it all seems to be so much. I just don't feel worthy of stepping into royalty like this. It all is so intimidating." His eyes pleaded with hers, "I chose you darling, you are the one I want to be my bride." Without any more protest she circled her hands around his waist and declared her love in return, "I will do my best for you, I will not be daunted by being represented by a color, but I will do my best to serve and please you." Her confidence was strong and true when she let herself trust him. "I must go now and win the battle facing our kingdom so we can live together in holy matrimony. Do not grow weary. When you begin to long for me, look deep into the purple in your ring, and remember that I shall return victrious." She gripped his face, "I shall wait for you my love, I will watch for you day and night." He tore away from her and rode off into the night as she watched in desperation for her knight to return.

I found this story confusing. Why was Alex shocked at the proposal? Who were these people that they were considered royalty? Why did Phillip need to go away?

Watch out for spelling errors.
