The last thing I wanted to do was go to church, but looking into those eyes I couldn’t say no. So instead I said, “Alright you kept your part of the bargain so I guess I will have to keep mine.” I was rewarded with a beautiful smile, and a kiss. “Now look you don’t have to go and get all mushy on me.” I said as I turned around and pulled my front door shut, and then I took her hand and we began to walk the short block to her church.
She was so excited that she talked non-stop as we walked, “I can’t wait for you to meet my minister he is so awesome. His name is Pastor Tom, and he gives such a nice sermon. I know you will love all the rest of my church family as well, they are so filled with the spirit of Jesus that you just have to love them.” Those beautiful green eyes just danced as we walked, funny I thought, but I could never remember being as full of love and excitement when I was a child.
As we arrived at the front door I felt nervous inside but there was no turning back now. So I just opened the door and we walked in hand in hand. She was right; everyone was very welcoming, and they made me feel right at home. A graying gentleman in a black robe and a sash came up to me and introduced himself as the minister. I offered him my hand but he said with a smile, “We don’t stand on formalities around here,” and he pulled me into a warm hug.
The music started and everyone went to their seats as the service began. We sang a song they called the praise chorus, and then the minister said a prayer. As I observed the ceremony, and participated where we were supposed to I began to feel a strange warmth inside my heart, it was like a door had been opened, and I could not help but smile. As the scripture was read I hung onto every word, like a dying man in the desert who was desperate for water.
I had never felt this way before, and it was somewhat overwhelming. I thought about getting up and running from the church, but I heard a voice in my ear say, “You promised her you would come now you have to stay until the service is over.” I looked around and there wasn’t anyone close enough to me to have whispered in my ear. Now I really felt weird, but I didn’t move.
The sermon started after a short prayer for the message, and the messenger, and as I sat and listened to the words he spoke I felt like he was speaking right to me. His sermon was about the prodigal son, and it was like I was hearing it for the first time.
After the sermon was over the pastor said we were going to sing the hymn of invitation, and he announced that if anyone felt like coming forward to the communion rail they could come and pray with him. I don’t know what came over me but before I knew it I was kneeling at the rail with tears in my eyes. That was the night I accepted Jesus, and nothing has ever been the same.
I never saw my green-eyed angel again after that night, as she died in her sleep that very night. Her mother said the doctors had not expected her to make it that long. Her little body had been so riddled with cancer. But I knew what she was waiting for; she had to make sure my soul was saved before she left to go home to God.
