One of the earliest memories of my childhood involved me, and my baby sister.
I was six years old when she was born, and it did not take me long to find out that the attention I had before she came was no longer there.
At first it was fun to change diapers and bottle feed her. When she became old enough to eat solid food it was no longer fun, and I rebelled. After awhile it became apparent that if I had something to eat, she wanted mine instead of what she had. Thus constituting a lot of crying, and Mother telling me to share.
She would stand up in her crib and scream if she didn’t get her way, and Mother would yell from the kitchen or where ever she was to pick her up from the crib and play with her. I wanted to go out side and play with my friends instead of having to stay in the house.
One day Mother sent me to the store to pick up some milk and sugar. She told me that because I had been such a good girl I could have a Babe Ruth candy bar. We did not have extra money for candy, so this was a real treat. I hurried to get back home from the store, so I could have the Babe Ruth candy bar.
When I brought the grocery bag into the house with the milk and sugar, Mother gave me the candy bar and told me to go check on my sister. I opened the Babe Ruth from the end and began to eat my candy bar. When I walked into the bedroom where my sister was I noticed she had messed in her diaper, and I knew I would have to change her. She saw the candy bar and began to scream and cry because she wanted it. My Mother asked me what she was crying about, and I told her she wants my candy bar. She said to share with her, and I became quite angry.
I waited until the candy bar was finished, and then went over to her crib to change her diaper. I took the contents of the diaper and placed it in the Babe Ruth wrapper and gave it to my sister. My Mother walked in at about the same time, and I received the whipping of my life. I ended up bathing my sister, and taking care of her for the rest of the day. That was the last time I tried something like that.
