God had commanded Moses to send spies into the land of Canaan. Twelve men, one from each tribe, were chosen to embark on the trip. I, Caleb, son of Jephunneh, was among those twelve, along with a strong young man named Joshua, the son of Nun.
We travelled together over the rising mountain ranges, through the vast wilderness of Zin. Through Rehob and Hamath we journeyed, even through Hebron, the home of the descendants of Anak. We sat and refreshed ourselves at the brook of Eschol, and even gathered pomegranates, figs, and a cluster of grapes too large for one man to bear. We drank in the intoxicating scent that drifted across the waves of the wind; it was only more proof that this land we were surveying was truly a land flowing with milk and honey. We walked through city and village, past those who stood in the gates, and we returned to the camp together, anxious to see our families.
But all was not well when we reached our homes. Ten of the same men who had gone and had seen all the wonders God would provide had become full of fear and doubt. They created in their hearts an evil report that caused the rest of the Israelites to fear the same. Joshua and I pleaded with them, begged them to listen, but it was to no avail. They grew angry with us when we accused them of losing faith, and would have stoned us. But God, hallelujah, in His mercy, came to our rescue. His glory filled the tabernacle of the congregation where we had gathered and He spoke unto Moses and Aaron. He told them of what was to come for the children of Israel for their provocation. Because of their fear and hardened hearts, these men and those who believed them would not be entering into the promised land.
I wondered, as I'm sure Joshua did as well, what would have possessed them to do such a thing?
