At last when the summer months begin to fade, and the thrills of school begin to enter each child’s head, and the horrors of school begin to haunt each teenager every morning, I know indeed the glorious months of Autumn have arrived…and not a moment too soon…

To put it bluntly, summer was ending and everyone he knew was now mournfully preparing for yet another long school year. This September he would be going in to eighth grade meaning he would be starting High School. To be honest he really was not anticipating that first day. His sister, Jennifer, who was not nearly as nervous, having already plunged through two long years: of lockers, switching classes, and excessive amounts of homework, she had already filled him in on everything he should need to know to survive this new school setting. Although he was thankful for the information, in no way did it help his confidence.

His last school had been much different and, in many ways, easier to figure out. One classroom, one teacher, one group of classmates. He did not remember ever having this much trouble way back when he had begun kindergarten. Now he found himself sitting in one of eight desks he would sit in this year, listening to one of eight different teachers that would teach him this year, sitting next to one of eight different classmates.

The schedule now taped to the inside of his new locker stared at him blankly every time he plugged in his combination and yanked open the door. Once again, he would run his finger along the chart to figure out where to go next, not yet having memorized the various items on his annual agenda. Grabbing the appropriate binder according to the schedule he would then rush off to the next appointed classroom, pushing his way through the sea of students that overflowed the halls.

Sadly, the one window of this classroom was strategically placed on the opposite side from where he sat. Teacher knew him already. Knew how he longed to be outside instead of cooped up in this room listening to classroom rules he had already heard dozens of times that day from previous teachers.

Sighing loudly, he leaned back in his chair hoping his teacher got his obvious hint. “To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1) a verse his mother seemed to treasure, and had recited to him repeatedly throughout his life.

However, now he noticed some truth to that verse. Why long for his old school and his old friends when he had so much opportunity here at his new school? In as much as summer was changing quickly over to autumn, he was watching a new season of life form before his eyes both in nature as well as his life. As he watched the changing leaves fall freely from the safety of the trees so could he walk the halls of his new school with just the same confidence he had before.
As the bell rang dismissing classes for the day, Ryan walked the halls with a renewed confidence; One that held trust and faith in God. A confidence that could trust in God No matter what season in life he would walk Ryan through.

Very good descriptions, and super interior monologue. Nice job weaving in the lesson too. This is a very nice piece.
