Oh Lord, they say that the childhood is the sweetest period of human life. It is free from worries. It is the innocent period of life free from any sin. Without any fear, it is the bravest period of life. But Lord, I do not remember anything of that period. Many scientists say that many of the childhood memories that lie hidden in the subconscious mind are the reasons for most of my complications.
Is it True That Childhood Memories Are Repressed?
The well-known psychologist Sigmund Freud has discovered the phenomenon that adults do not remember their childhood events occurring before they were as old as six. Medical world has named it as Childhood Amnesia or Infantile Amnesia. It is the common inability of adults to remember the earliest years of their childhood. It is believed that the memories of this period, up to the age of three or four, are repressed because they are too traumatic.
Why this Memory Loss?
They say that that there are two categories of Infantile Amnesia. The first category is that saying memory loss is due to the storage difficulty(i.e. early memory experiences are not properly transformed into long-term memories) and the second category that claims the memory loss is a retrieval problem(i.e. memories exist, but we are unable to recollect them).
Is it The Word That Causes Memory?
Researchers like Dr. Gabrielle Simcock and Dr. Harlene Hayne of the University of Otago, New Zealand state that the period of this childhood amnesia tends to end about the time of the onset of language. So it is the language or the Word that makes our memories. When the child begins to speak and recognize it develops its memory also.
Age Forgets In Due Course
Another explanation about this childhood memory says that we do not recognize our own early experiences as we get older. There is also another theory that children develop self awareness by about two year of age.
Many Want To Forget But I want To Remember
It is quite human to forget the bitter things in life. Man wants to forget his pains and sorrows. He wants to retain the sweetest memories. Childhood has been the happiest period of my life and hence I want to cherish the memories of those innocent days. Lord take me back to my early happy and innocent days.
Oh Lord, Make me a Child
Lord you know me through and through even better than I know myself even from the very moment of conception. Oh God, “you called me from my mother’s womb; you pronounced my name before I was born” (Isaiah 49:1) You know my childhood and my repressed memories. Take me in your hand and cure me from the defects that have been caused by the repressed memories of my infancy.
