Summer also has a reputation of being lazy. Basically, summer is misunderstood. It is hard work to make so many areas of the country so hot. It is we humans who become lethargic and are thus perceived as lazy. The exception being, those people who really are lazy, taking advantage of Summer’s dislike of alarm clocks.
The Season family members are all collectors but it is Summer who has the biggest collection of memories. Think about your childhood and you’ll probably remember vacations with your family, trepidation on the high dive at the community pool and trips to the beach. All summer events. The only other time there is time for a family vacation is at Christmas so Winter’s collection of memories comes in a close second. Without school, there is just more time to make fun memories during the summer.
For that reason, I believe Summer is the favorite child in the Season family. Who doesn’t want to look back on their life and have enjoyable memories? The “Are we there yet,” whines of yesteryear become “I’m glad we went there.” The high dive becomes the stage on which fear was conquered. Upon discovering your shell collection, you feel the warm sand and smell the sea air.
But when the vacation is over, the pool is closed for repairs and there are no beach days on the horizon the needle can get stuck on the song, “Boredom.” Somehow, someway the needle must be lifted off the vinyl album and moved. The sanity of mothers all over the country is threatened by that stuck needle. Suddenly a small, water filled ball hits the arm of the record player and the song changes. Sounds of whispered strategic planning play all over the neighborhood as children plan their surprise attacks.
Summer, the oddball with a style all its own has marched in. For the next several weeks we will continue to march with it, trying to follow along as it follows the beat of a different drummer. Vacation is over and we don’t have a pool nearby but weekly beach days with the church youth start next week. I’m beginning to hear the irritating scratchiness of a broken record. Excuse me; I have to go buy some water balloons.
