The Too Short Season
The smell of rain on hot pavement.
The sound of laughter in the park
The color in the gardens and the scent of the plants
The smell of charcoal burning
The sizzling of the steaks
The singing of a thousand birds
The buzzing of the bees
All of these say summer to me.
Friends will come to visit
To the beaches we will go
Picnics in the forest
Bike riding in the village
Weddings will be attended
And mowing of the lawn
We’ll need to water gardens
All of these say summer to me.
When the ground was white with snow
The temp was zero or below
The wind blew in the windows
And we had no place to go
I often wondered if this time would ever come
Before we know it all the beauty will be done.
Outdoors in the sunshine
I smile and I praise
I’ll just do my best to enjoy each day
Of this far too short season
That is summer to me.
