Dear God,
My heart is full of sin and shame. It is proud. It is arrogant. It’s overwhelmingly self-occupied. There’s nothing like it in the world. The heart is full of deceit, indeed. It’s desperately wicked! And it’s my heart that the Scripture is talking about.
Have mercy on me, O God, for my heart is so full of pride. Of self-righteousness. Of manipulative schemes and self-serving strategies.
Cleanse me from every trace of uncleanness. Of impure intentions. Of self-exalting goals and ignoble purposes.
Wash me from all of my self-glorious deeds and self-gratifying acts. These are but an outflow of a heart whose center is not You, Oh, Holy One.
My heart schemes. It’s self-seeking. It selfishly calculates. Thoroughly purify me, Oh Merciful God!
Today, I will return to You and I will rend my heart. In Your mercy, I will hope. In Your grace, I will trust. And in Your unfailing kindness and love, I will cling.
From your wayward child
Dearly beloved child of Mine,
You have rended your heart and not your garments. You have returned to Me. My heart leaps with joy in your return. You have turned away from what’s hurting and destructive for you. My heart sings with gladness.
As you’ve emptied your heart from your sin and shame, I can now fill it to the brim with My peace, joy and love.
It’s only when your heart is empty can My Spirit fill you.
It’s only when it counts everything as loss can My Son be exalted in you.
It’s only when you lose your life in Me can you keep it for the joy everlasting.
My dearly beloved child, your joy will know no bounds and your praise will be inexpressible when I, the Holy One, am the Only One in your heart.
With My unfailing kindness and love,
God
