Topic: Empty and Full (06/04/09)
The air is crisp. Maple trees display their hues of brilliant crimson, orange, and yellow. The windy road isn’t busy. Only a few locals and visitors are on the road. It’s a weekday. From September till Christmas Apple Hill is hopping each weekend. The major thoroughfare can be backed up for miles! People come from as far away as San Francisco, even further. Farms dot the landscape on each side of the road. A huge sunflower painting graces the side of an old barn. In the distance, rolling lush green foothills and rows and rows of grapevines capture our eyes. My husband and I arrive at one of our favorite apple farms. The wind whistles through the tall pine trees. A charter bus rolls to a stop; people disembark and scatter pell-mell. Our serenity is broken. Guests mull around; shop and place food orders. A scarecrow greets us at the entrance to the gift shop and food court. Umm…the aroma of apples and cinnamon drift through the air making our mouths water.

“How may I help you?” a smiling lady asks at the counter.

“Two apple-cinnamon donuts and two apple crumb donuts please,” answers my husband.

“Thank you.” he says, as the server hands him the bag of donuts.

Sitting at the redwood picnic tables, we enjoy our favorite treats.

My husband and I wander about, buy a box of golden delicious apples and return to the car. The apples safely in the trunk, we head for the bake shop, then sharing a large piece of warm apple pie and ice cream. Walking to the pond, we stand watching a father help his son maneuver a fishing pole. Gazing into the distance is a breathtaking view of the Sierra foothills. Sitting on the rustic bench my husband and I savor the moments. Blue jays as well as other birds sing sweet songs of praise. Clean air, a peaceful, tranquil and serene spot - just what we need to refresh our spirit. Thank you, God, for your amazing handiwork.
