“When the centurion,… heard his cry and saw how he died, he exclaimed, “Surely this man was the Son of God!” Mark 15:39 NIV
Journeys to the cross begin in so many different ways. Mine began as a one pound nine ounce premature baby in Norwood, Massachusetts. Where did his begin? The centurion’s I mean.
Could he have been in the garden and seen the look of Jesus when he was betrayed by a kiss? Was he close enough to see the healing of the servant of the high priest’s ear? Did he hear Jesus rebuke his disciples for wanting to fight with the sword? Was he amazed at how fast the disciples fled? Did he witness the false testimony before the Sanhedrin? Jesus was silent during it all; did this speak to his heart? Was he surprised at the shouts of “Barabbas” and “Crucify him!”? Did his hand hit him, did his voice mock him, or did he throw lots? Surely he heard the words, “Father, forgive them”!
“Lest I forget Gethsemane, lest I forget thine agony, lest I forget your love for me, Lead me to Calvary”, words to one of my favorite songs. God has answered that prayer many times in the midst of the bread and wine. He has, let me hear the words “forgive them” and made me stop in all these places on my bitter sweet journey to the cross.
“Surely this is the Son of God”, surely this is my savior are the only words we can utter if we truly believe and really see the events of that journey to the cross.
Dear Lord thank you for the bitter but sweet journey that takes us to the cross, thank you for grace that doesn’t call ten thousand angels to destroy us but utters the words “forgive them”. And is willing that none should perish. In Jesus name Amen
