In Darkness His Light Shines

Opposites do attract, but after the attraction can a relationship be forged that will stand the test of time? To forge is to form using heat and great pressure to bind together in such a way that separation is impossible without causing serious damage to the thing that is forged.

Consider this, two opposing natures, two opposite personalities from two cultures that have little in common, but they have become attracted to each other. Every marriage counselor in America has probably faced this situation and without a doubt has asked themselves how does this happen? How do I help these people realize that technically they are incompatible, and they would be rolling a boulder up hill if they pursue a long term relationship?

A good example for a counselor to use might be to show the couple a black heart and a white heart. While they are looking at the hearts ask if they can make the black heart white or the white heart black. Of course, the answer is they cannot. There is no black in the color white, and black cannot be made white without destroying the color black itself. White lacks any color at all. So if color is added, you no longer have white.

In the book of I John chapter one and verse five, we find that God is light and in Him is no darkness. God is incapable of existing in harmony with darkness. However, His light shines in darkness and the darkness cannot put out His light. What does this scripture possibly have to do with our opposites attract scenario? God is attracted to those who are opposite of Him. When God is involved in relationships, they can last forever.

Light (white) and dark (black) are opposites and in God they are incompatible. God is light (white) and He has absolutely no darkness (black) in Him. His character is pure, holy and without spot. Darkness in the Bible usually refers to evil, hidden sins, perversion, something that is not pure or without spot. Romans chapter thirteen, verses eleven through fourteen talk about the night being advanced and the day coming quickly. It refers to the works of darkness and the need to cast them off. After the works of darkness are cast off, then the “armour of light” can be put on. Only those who are full of light can wear the “armour of light” because it is the armour given by God.

Now, since the word of God indicates that we can put off darkness and put on light, isn’t there hope for opposites who attract? I believe there is. In the world of fashion and interior design, black and white are neutrals and are often used together to make a bold, dramatic statement. They do not match, they create contrast in a fabric or in a room. Contrast in the dictionary means, the use of opposing elements such as colors, forms or lines. Designers use contrast or opposites to create a striking difference that is extremely appealing to the eye. God on the other hand, takes the striking differences, blurs the lines that polarize and creates an environment where people are eager to lay aside their differences. He alone makes these situations work. God, the creator and man, the creature are forged together by a strong and powerful love. The darkness is dispelled by the presence of everlasting light.

So, I conclude that with our God, opposites who attract have every advantage to forge a relationship that cannot be broken. We were once sinners living in total darkness, devoid of light, which is the opposite of God and yet, the creator of the universe in His infinite mercy extended undeserved favor to each of us. Light overcame the darkness and in so doing, each human being has the opportunity to be made spotless, and once darkness is removed, only light remains. God never reminds us of the dark side of ourselves. He only remembers the light that began to shine at the moment He came into our lives.

What a great read! You have lots here for folks to ponder, plus you've backed it up with the Word of God. By the way, if I ever need marital counseling, you're my first choice as a counselor. Well done!

Many great illustrations in this piece. Sometimes, especially when defining the words, your writing sounds more stiff, but when you use your own words and thoughts, they flow very smoothly! I especially love the last line. Well done!

Very good devotional-relax a little! I especially liked the last paragraph and the black/white comparison.

Thanks for this writing. This could be one of the best study lines for a college and career group. I enjoyed it very much
