The Indian Upanishad says, “Lead me from darkness to light, O God!” Man seeks light for his survival. All living organisms need light for their survival. But some are frightened by light.

Why are some frightened by light?
It may be surprising to us to know that some are frightened by light. But it is a fact. When we stay in the dark for too long, then instead of being afraid of the dark we become afraid of light.

There are two things that keep people away from light. They do not seek the divine light. They keep their hearts closed from reaching that light.
1) The first reason is ignorance. “you do not know where I come from and where I am going.” (John 8:14) Most of us are ignorant of the mission of Jesus Christ It is because “we are from below.”(John 8: 23) We keep ourselves tied up with the to the world as we belong to it.
2) Second reason is the pride. Pride is the deadly disease that keeps most of us in the dark. Most of us refuse to repent and accept Christ as Lord because of our pride. The consequence of pride is what Jesus warns us, “you would die in your sins.” (John 8: 24)

Jesus Is the Light
Jesus says that He is the light of the world and further He says that we are also the light of the world. “You are the light of the world…let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds.”(Matthew 5: 14, 16)

How Can We Be Light in the Dark
There is a proverb that says, “It is better to light up a candle than curse the darkness.” Jesus has asked us to be the light of the world. How can we be the light in the dark world? Here are some suggestions by which we can be the light of the world.
1) We can extend kindness
We can write kind messages which may help struggling people. Our kind words can be tremendously encouraging and can become permanently etched the recipient’s mind and spirit.
2) We should pray for others
Most of us are praying for our own selfish interests which illuminate the dark places of our life. Prayer is always powerful when we pray for others with real intention.
3) Let us stand for others
It is by our actions of standing for others that we prove that we are the light of the world. As it is given in the biography of Mother Teresa (The name of the book, “Come , Be My Light,”), Jesus is calling all of us to be His light in the world.

Let Us Follow The Light
Our Lord Jesus is the Light. When Jesus proclaimed He was the light of the world, He was saying, “ I am God’s presence in your midst”. To follow Him is to inherit the promise, “ you shall not walk in darkness”. As light of the world He brings life into focus. We begin to understand the difficulties of life in this world. Jesus is not only the light, but also He makes our life also the light of the world.

Interesting reflections on light and dark.

I'm curious as to why you opened with an Indian scripture.

You made very good points in this devo.
