The other day I met someone that had such a hard-look in their eyes. Their demeanor was so defensive and they gave off an aura of anger. How would you react if you met someone like this? Some may react by pulling back or others may attempt to avoid them all together.

Proverbs 15:13 (NIV) says “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” When you are happy, your face cannot betray itself and it must bring forth a pleasant appearance. The last part of this verse says, “..heartache crushes the spirit.” When someone is crushed, your eyes cannot betray this emotion and your appearance can look very hard.

After talking with this person, I was able to see the tenderness underneath their angry glare. When the tears fell from their eyes, the hardened eyes gave a more softened appearance. There was more to this hardness than my first impression had told me.

God sees us from the inside out. He knows what is on the inside and can look beyond our tough exteriors to the depths of our emotions. Proverbs 20:27 (NKJV) tells us that “The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, Searching all the inner depths of his heart.” We cannot hide our true feelings from Him; He looks deeper than anyone else would.

God offers hope to those who are discouraged and troubled in heart. “For He heals the broken hearted and binds their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 (NKJV) Let us look beyond those who are hardened and try to help soften their souls by showing the love of Christ.

This was a gentle yet pointed reminder that God sees it all - there's no hiding anything from Him. And for that, we can be grateful!

Great point. Only God sees the heart.

Some very good thoughts here.
