With gentle nail-pierced hands
Affectionately stretched out toward humanity,
Mellow the callous and the merciless
Who settle down before His strong but quiet presence,
Totally mystified by the serenity of His abounding grace.
Through the uphill battles
Of toublesome times and uncertain moments,
The world remains harsh and remorseless.
But He stands as a compassionate and righteous judge
Whose exacting verdict mollifies the most hard-bitten.
His tender love is more powerful
Than any fierce hatred,
His caring generosity is more formidable
Than any ruthless greediness,
His patience is more tolerant
Than any grueling hotheadedness,
His forgiveness is more potent
Than any hardheartedness.
His face is endearingly mild and easy and light,
The sweet smile of a Redeemer.
No wearisome burdens to carry,
No impenetrable wall to conquer,
For He is a solid rock with a delicate heart,
A firm foundation but so comfortable to lean on.
His soothing voice is a lovely song in a rugged wilderness,
Subduing hardened, laborious tears of pain,
Silencing severe trials into restful whispers
Until the muted, whispered tones
Cradle all cares to a cozy lullaby.
The pleasant fragrance of perfume
Flowing from His heavenly garden
Eliminates the most stubborn, repulsive stench
Brought about by shame and cold wickedness.
Yet the gentleness of the Omnipotent
Can permeate even the toughest pillar,
For His holiness and glory
Radiating from His mighty throne,
Tightly packed and sealed
With His unconditional love,
Spreads like misty stardust
On a golden twilight,
Lifting the soul in unity with the Savior
