All other needs quickly denied.
Ears strained, heart thumping, listening
To hear the message God would bring.
With palms turned upwards to the sky
He bowed and worshipped: ‘Here am I’.
And Abraham’s faith did not give way
To what God asked of him that day.
With quick obedience he embraced
The hardest task he’d ever faced.
No explanation as to why,
Just clear command came from on high.
‘Go sacrifice your promised son,
The one I gave you, precious one,
The one whose name means joy and laughter,
Take him Abraham.’ But thereafter
No further explanation came
Of why God made of him this claim.
He listened, then obeyed, God-fearing,
Softened heart, not hard of hearing.
Heartbreaking journey, climbing higher
Up the slopes of Mount Moriah.
Trusting in what God had said,
Believing He could raise the dead,
Clinging to God’s Covenant Word
Of Promise, which he’d clearly heard.
Knowing that from Isaac’s seed
A mighty nation would proceed.
Abraham put all doubts aside
And told his son ‘God will provide.’
As Abraham reached and took the knife
To slay his son and give his life.
A voice from Heaven called his name
His quick response was just the same –
‘Here Am I Lord’, then God supplied
A ram instead, He did provide.
‘Because you’ve not withheld your son,
I’ll bless you greatly precious one.’
The hardest task that Abraham faced
Was blessed with God’s abundant grace.
Lord, let your living Word impart
A softening to my hardened heart.
Dividing, judging thoughts and deeds
Convicting, answering all my needs.
As Abraham’s story I retrace
Remove my hardness by your grace.
Let my heart also malleable be
Quick in obedient constancy.
If ways be hard, help me comply
And softly whisper ‘Here Am I’
