Topic: The Kingdom of God (03/12/09)

TITLE: Again!
By John Elliott

Anyone that has a child older than three has probably heard that word spoken with great emphasis. Whether it was a ride on your back or throwing them up in the air and catching them without injury, the joy and laughter created were sweet music to your ears.

Combined with this unpretentious laughter and joy is a simple and straight-forward faith that knows nothing of the fatigue of your knees after that third time around the house or the fatigue of your arms after ten tosses in the air. All this faith knows is that it was fun, safe, exhilarating and it is time to do it, “Again!”

How interesting is it to know that God desires our acceptance of Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord with a faith like that of a little child. Jesus stated this quite clearly when he said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (Mark 10:15 NIV) What a wonderful offer! Here is an offer to drop the pretense of our own wisdom and knowledge and replace it with acceptance of all that God offers us in this world and a trust in His ability to bring in the new world to come.

Yet, as an adult with years of child-rearing and problem solving, how do I go about trusting in the Lord with the faith of a little child? It is so very hard to drop the ‘wisdom’ I have gained and intentionally act in a way that seems foolish or simple. Yet it is this simplicity that lightens my burdens, brightens my day and puts that spring back into my step. It seems foolish to not want this.

Spring is coming and there can be no better earthly reminder of the resurrection than the greening of the grass, the trees bring out new leaves and flowers blooming. Can I make the grass grow or a flower bloom? No, I cannot. But I do have the opportunity to marvel at the beauty God places before me in the grass and flowers and ask Him to do it, “Again!”

Can you imagine a Heavenly Father that has so much fun making flowers bloom whisper in your ear, “That was fun! I’m not tired. Let’s do it again!” Our God does not grow weary of making the grass grow or the flowers bloom. So, while we await the Heavenly Kingdom of God to be revealed, let us enjoy the next sunrise or sunset with laughter and joy and let God know that we want to see it, “Again!”
