Topic: The Kingdom of God (03/12/09)

TITLE: Daniel finds the kingdom

Daniel finds the kingdom

“Daddy, what’s a kingdom?” Daniel looked up at his father as they walked through the park.

“A kingdom, Daniel. Why do you want to know about a kingdom?”

“Miss Jones was telling us in Sunday School that we should seek the kingdom of God. She wants us to learn a verse from Matthew chapter six.”

“I think I know that verse,” his father said. “’Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you’. Is that it?”

“Yes, Daddy that’s it. But I don’t know what a kingdom is and so I don’t know where to look.”

Daniel’s father smiled to himself at this answer. “Let’s find a bench and sit down for a while, and I’ll try and help you.”

They soon found a bench under a lovely shade tree.
“A kingdom, Daniel,” his father began, “is usually a country ruled by a king or queen, or maybe a government that rules the people. The kingdom of God is that which belongs to Him and those who belong to Him, His people.”

“Do I have to look for God then?” Daniel asked.

“Well, yes, in a way that is what God wants. He made you for Himself and so He wants you to be part of His kingdom.”

“How Daddy? How can I do that?”

“Do you believe that God loves you?”

“Yes, Daddy.”

“How do you know that, Daniel?”

“Because He sent Jesus to die on the cross for me. Miss Jones told us about it.”

“Well Daniel, if you believe that and want to be part of God’s kingdom, then He wants you to ask Jesus into your life, to save you from sin and make you His child.”

Daniel did not answer for a while. He did love Jesus but he had never really asked Him to be part of his life. But since his Sunday School teacher had told him to seek the kingdom of God it had been on his mind every day. Now he understood better. Perhaps now was the time to ask Jesus to be his Saviour.

“Daddy,” he said at last, “I want to be part of God’s kingdom. Can I do it now?”

“Yes, Daniel, If you are sure that is what you want. Just tell Jesus you want Him to come into your life to save and keep you. Okay?”

Daniel closed his eyes and bowed his head.
“Dear Jesus,” he began, “I know You love me and I do love You. Please come into my life and make me Your child, because I believe You died for me. Thank You. Amen.”

“Now Daniel,” his father said, “you are a part of God’s kingdom. You belong to Him.”

“Thanks Daddy. I can tell Miss Jones I have found the kingdom.”

“Yes, you can. But there is more Daniel. God wants you to live for Him now. That means to follow Jesus and try to be like Him. The verse says ‘seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness’. That means doing what is right, doing what God says. He has special blessings for those who seek His righteousness.

“Jesus was talking to a crowd of people and He was trying to show them the importance of the life God had given them. He told them how God, their heavenly Father, looks after the birds and the flowers. He said they were more important than the birds who were fed every day. He told them not worry about food and drink and clothing, but to trust God who knows that they need these things.

“That was when He said ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.’

“Can you understand that Daniel?”

“I think so Daddy. I do want to be like Jesus and I want Him to take care of me.”

“Okay Daniel. Come, let’s go home and tell Mommy all about it. I know she will be happy to know what you have done today. Then on Sunday you can tell Miss Jones you did seek the kingdom of God and that you are going to follow Jesus.”

Such a sweet story and full of truth. In dialog, it's more realistic if the person speaking doesn't use the other's name. I love stories of when little ones are saved. Good job.
