It was an unusual meeting at Grace Church. First, it was unusual because the elders, deacons and pastor Ron never meet together. Second, because of what would happen at this meeting.

The church had been praying about adopting a church in South America. The elder’s area of responsibility was for the spiritual direction of the church. The deacon’s area was the building and finances. The church decided that both boards had to make the final decision about which church to adopt.

Going into the meeting it was thought that they were going to adopt a church in Lima, Peru. What was supposed to happen was there would be a discussion and a final vote.

George who neared retirement, had been a life long member of Grace. He was the chairman of the Elders and would chair the meeting.

"I call this meeting to order, if all the members are here say so by saying I, "said George.

There was a resounding “I” was said by all of the members.

"We are here to discuss and vote on what will become Grace Lima. Is there any discussion?" said George.

That was when the meeting got stressful. Bill a salesman in his forties, representing the deacon's board said, "The members of the deacon's board have prayed and discussed Grace Lima, and have decided that we should not adopt the church in Lima Peru."

George and the other members of the elder board had stunned looks on their faces.

"What gives? We have been planning and praying about this for months. If not Lima, Peru were should we go?" said George with an angry look on his face.

"The deacons didn't take this decision lightly. There is a church that is located in Brasilia, Brazil, we feel that we should adopt," Bill said as he knew was walking on eggshells. He knew he upset George, but he felt it was the right thing to do.

"Why this now? Why did you not discuss this with the elder board months ago?" snapped George.

"Sorry George the deacons have had doubts, and we got together last week to discuss this. We made the decision last night," said Bill.

Pastor Ron got up and said, "members of the board of deacons and elders. I think we need to calm down. We don't need to finalize our decision tonight. I think we need to pray about it and come back here and meet in 30 days." He did not want this to get out of hand.

"You're right Pastor Ron. I am sorry for being so angry. We need to pray about this. Is there a second?" asked George."

Someone yelled "second."

"All those if favor say I?" said George.

Everyone said “I”.

"Opposed?" George asked.

No one said anything

"The I's have it we will meet at our regular meeting a month from now,” said a relieved George.

As it turned out they all decided to adopt a church in Lima, Peru a month later.

This was intriguing. I'd like to know more about the elders' reasons.

One small thing: When people are giving an oral vote, they're saying "aye", not "I".

Keep writing--I enjoyed this story.
