As well, I reminisce about the day nine and a half years ago, when, during a month long holiday in the United States of America, we drove over the border from Buffalo in northern New York State, to Canada, and visited Niagara Falls for a day.
There are many memories I have of that day, back in early December 1999. We arrived there, and all got out of the van. The air outside was cold, but not as cold as I expected.
There are two sets of waterfalls at Niagara Falls: the American Falls on the American side of the border, and the Horseshoe Falls, in Canada.
From the car park, I remember how the roar of the falls could be heard. As one who often connects with God through nature, I found this filled me with a sense of awe.
Niagara Falls, are very impressive. To describe the experience of Niagara Falls, the sound of the roar of the water as it cascades over and falls into the river below is loud, and almost overwhelming.
I remember the wind blowing, and copping a spray of water in the face as I felt the chill of the air around my legs as I stood near the railing and looked at Niiagara Falls.
There is a boat that goes underneath Niagara Falls, The Maid of the Mist, but this wasn't operating the day we visited because of the cold weather.
Up the hill from Niagara Falls to an area called Clifton Hill. At Clifton Hill, there are restaurants, shops selling souvenirs ranging from the tasteful to the tacky, side shows and amusement arcades.
Niagara Falls is reputed to be the world's honeymoon capital. Whether this is just something said in tourist brochures, or a proven fact, I don’t know. This is why I question this assertion.
Though Niagara Falls are impressive, Clifton Hill reminded me of Surfer's Paradise; a tourist area in Australia famous as much for its beaches, as it is for its side shows and souvenir outlets selling things that border on the kitsch and overblown.
Brand me a cynic or a non-romantic if you will, but these things do not really associate themselves with romance.
So, this is my appraisal of Canada; based on my eight hours at Niagara Falls, and Clifton Hill.
Perhaps someday I will get to visit Canada for myself.
Until then, I will just be content with the framed photo of Lake Louise we have on display in our lounge room, and the occasional e-mails from the people I know there.
