Are you familiar with TAZ? You know, that cute little whirling dervish which irritated Bugs Bunny whizzing and whirring around like a tornado? He may have been born in Tasmania, the southernmost territory of Australia.

Do you know what a macropod is? A kookaburra? I’m sure you’ve heard of a wombat and a dingo. But what about a bandicoot? An echidnas? These are just some of Australia’s strange and unique creatures. You can find some information on these creatures at www.environment.nsw.gov.au/plantsanimals/NativeAnimalFactSheetsByCategory.htm

Did you know according to the Australian government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade web page the country has the largest wild camel population in the world?

Have you ever heard of a weka or a kakapo? Or a kea? These are birds which are found in Australia’s neighbor, the island of New Zealand situated in the South Pacific off the coast of Victoria and New South Wales Australia.

Because of New Zealand’s location in the southern hemisphere its seasons are opposite of those of us who live north of the equator. Its warmest months are December, January, and February and its coldest June, July and August.

I like trivia, so I enjoyed reading about the unusual animals in that part of the world.

Consider expanding this--maybe tie in some devotional-type lesson about creation, or even making up a children's story about Australia's animals.

Nope, can't say that I have heard of many of those names.
Very interesting.
