Time marches forward with the same dogged determination that all the great armies in history have in their quest for power. Time is relentless as it consumes everything in its path leaving a wake of memories and sometimes regrets but still it marches on.

Several years ago I witnessed the majesty of time standing still for a brief moment as my eyes fell on one of the most hallowed artifacts of American history. Never before and not since have I experienced an overwhelming gratitude for my heritage and my country as I did in this moment.

In the summer of 2001 I had the privilege of touring our nation’s capitol with my family. We enjoyed the sights and the history of our great nation even taking in the splendor of the White House. But the highlight and the significance of this journey did not shine through for me until I turned the corner on the third floor of the Smithsonian Institute of American History and stood face to face with “Old Glory”.

The very cloth that caught the gaze of Francis Scott Key and emboldened him to pen the words to the Star Spangled Banner had caught my gaze as well and it held me in its grasp. Tattered, torn and discolored from years of living this old rag lay at the mercy of specialists that worked with care and diligence to restore her to her original beauty.

What tales she could weave and oh how she touched me as I stood in silence thinking about the heritage that she represented. Never before in history and never since has God so blessed a nation from the moment of inception and Old Glory stood as God’s witness to the blessings He poured out on The Untied States of America.

The U.S.A. is still in its infancy as countries go and yet this newborn seems to be the glue holding together all the societies of our world in the midst of war, disaster, struggle for life and unspeakable horrors. I can’t help but believe that President Ronald Reagan might have had Old Glory in mind when he called America the shining city set on a hill. Just as Old Glory was still standing by the grace of God when Francis Scott Key looked to the heavens that victorious morning I pray that America will still be standing when the countries of our world look to the heavens.

God has blessed the U.S.A.
