A Possible Reason
Why Christmas? Why a baby in a manger? Why shepherds and wise men? Why? Why? Why? An answer came to me as I learned back in my chair and began to think over Christmases past. Why do we do the things we do every year at this time, during the month of December on the very same date?
The answer that came to me seemed so simple, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized I might just be right! The reason is…you and me. We are the reason. God had a plan long before he even created the heavens and the earth. That plan included you and me with all of our good intentions, charitable works, and misled desires. How could we, such imperfect beings, accept this amazing gift, this baby who would eventually give his life for each of us? The answer to that is we must. If we believe, if we have faith, if we believe God’s word, we know that baby is our Savior. The plan was perfection because we are not.
He was born in a manger rather than a nice warm room on a soft bed. No matter where we are born, God knows us and loves each of us, just as he loved his son. He sent shepherds and wise men because no matter what our station or place in life may be, we each have gifts that God supplied to use for the good of all. By using our gifts, we create that bond of God’s people into a community. We minister to one another as we are able, so we also minister to him.
So this year, there will be no tree in my house, there will be many less presents, and my family agrees. We will take more time to turn to God’s word and his promises for us. We will remember why that baby was born in a manger and visited by shepherds and wise men alike. We will all be a little more humble this year and a lot more thankful.
