The Receiving Season
Looking up from her tea cup, Grace sighed. “I’m dreading Christmas this year.” She said. She had always enjoyed these daily visits with her friend but today it was different. It had been a difficult couple of months. She was still recovering from a broken hip. She had always been capable but now she was, well, limited.
“Why the dread?” asked her companion
“I can’t do the shopping this year. I have always loved buying for my Grandchildren.” She replied.
“What do you think Christmas is about?”
“Well, giving, of course.” Another question! Grace was getting uncomfortable with the direction of this conversation. What was the matter with her friend today? She just wanted to show her family how much she loved them. What was wrong with that?
“There are seasons in life, Grace . . . ”started her companion.
Her anger flared “I don’t want to hear this, I want to continue to show my family I love them. I don’t want these limitations to stop me from that! Is that too much to ask?” She struggled to keep her emotions under control.
“After the Magi came into the house they saw the child with Mary, His mother and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” Matthew 2:11
“What!?!” Grace was momentarily confused. “Oh, yes, you do understand. I want to give presents to my babies the way the wise men gave to Jesus.”
Patiently, her companion listened. Then quietly replied. “No, dear one. You are missing the point. Even the Mighty One had a time when He received. He didn’t need the gifts, but it was His season to receive the gifts, it was not yet time for Him to give. It is not your season to give Grace, but it is your season to receive.”
Suddenly, the frustration drained from her body. Peace slowly ebbed throughout her. She sighed once again, this time embracing the joy of the season.
“Forgive me.” She said. “I’m glad you gave and I received your gift so many years ago. Spending time with you in our daily visits always reminds me why I need you in my life. This is why you created Christmas in the first place. I love you Lord.” She said. “And thank you for your son Father, in His precious name I pray. Amen.”
