When contemplating going” Home” what comes to mind? Remembering our favorite foods being lovingly made and smells wafting from the kitchen are a sensory delight. Kisses stolen under the mistletoe, or caroling in the cold or around the piano cause you to grin and hum even now. Maybe you reminisce of ornaments lovingly placed year after year, reminding you of Christmases long ago. Does your heart and mind linger on loved ones no longer here to celebrate the holidays with? All of these things and many more may say fun, laughter, stability, and love, don’t they?
But what if this wasn’t the way it was? What if there were unresolved issues you fear may rear their ugly heads. In holidays gone by, maybe too much drinking, or not so innocent exchanges now mar your image of “home”. Is there not much joy in “going home” this year?
That is the way it was for me and the thought of another spoiled holiday provoked me to write these words.
What would it be like?
What would it be like to chose my words carefully so not offend?
It would be like giving a cup of cold water on a hot summer’s day.
What would it be like to not hold a grudge against someone I once loved?
It would be like an eagle in flight.
What would it be like not feeling such painful guilt?
It would be like a heart set free.
Would it be like to forgive someone without being asked?
It would be like God with Adam and Eve.
Would it be like to be truly grateful?
It would be like the one cleansed leper.
What would it be like to receive undeserved forgiveness?
It would be like the thief on the cross.
What would it be like to love unconditionally?
It would be like Jesus.
Isn’t that what Christmas is about anyway? Jesus left his glorious home to come humbly to this strife filled world. He came to provide a way for peace for all of us, through His life.
If going home spurs uneasy thoughts and feelings, come humbly, like Jesus. With confession comes forgiveness, when we come to Him. Seek reconciliation with those you need to. It may or may not be that you will ever have the holidays of your dreams, but you can have a lighter heart and a smile to greet them with because you have done your part. Then trust God to win over the ones you long to be with this Christmas.
