It was the night before Christmas and Betsy could not wait to give her dad his Christmas gift. She was excited because her dad had been in Iraq for four years. He just got home on Christmas Eve. Betsy was four when her dad left and she was now eight and in second grade. She was dressed in her red Christmas dress and had a red ribbon in her blond hair.

She picked up the present that was in a small flat box with red wrapping paper that had a green bow on it. Her mom Barb helped her wrap the gift. She ran to her dad who was a burly brown haired man, who was sitting in the sofa chair. Betsy sits down in his lap and hands him the box.

"Daddy, you got to open my gift first," said Betsy.

"Ok, sweetheart," he said.

With a big smile on his face he pulled off the ribbon and started to rip off the wrapping paper. He opened the box and pulled out a ceramic circle with an imprint of a hand on it. Around the edges it said, "I miss you daddy with love Betsy."

Bob, who loved his daughter very much, started to cry. He missed allot of things past four years. He was very touched by what his daughter made him.

"Is this your hand?" he asked.

"Yes it is daddy," she said with a smile on her face.

"Did you make this in school?" dad said.

"Yes I did daddy,” Betsy said.

He could not control the tears running down his face, and cried even harder. He put the gift down and hugged his daughter. Bob had this tingly feeling inside of him because of the love his daughter had for him.

"I really missed you," dad said as he bawled.

"I missed you to," as dad breathed slowly.

The good news was that this was his last deployment. There would be no more missed concerts. He now could play hide and seek with his daughter just like they used to do before he left. They now would be able to spend all the holidays together. Farther and daughter will live happier ever after.

Ahhh... I'm sure there are many who won't make it home this Christmas. Well written!
