I’ll never forget the best Christmas gift I’ve ever received. I really wanted that big walking doll I had seen when we’d gone shopping about a week before Christmas. She was almost as big as I was, with long blonde hair and the cutest pink smile. She had on a brown leather jacket with fur trim and boots to match. The name on the box said Wendy Walker. I just knew I’d have lots of fun with her.
Counting down the days till Christmas was very difficult. The anticipation was almost overwhelming. Finally, the big night arrived.
It was so difficult to go to bed and try to sleep when I was young and so excited. I sure hoped I’d find that big doll under the Christmas tree amongst the mountain of gifts that seemed to arrive every year.
I don’t remember doing it, but I finally did fall asleep. I woke with my younger brother, John, shaking me and saying, “There’s a big doll down there. Wake up. Come and see the big doll.”
Well, I was out of bed in a flash and on my way down the stairs. As I turned the corner, there was the most precious sight of my young life. The tree was aglow with colored lights. The usual mountain of gifts had been deposited beneath the tree. Out in front, and leaning back against the mountain, was the Wendy Walker doll I had been hoping for.
It was still dark out. No one else was awake at 4:00 AM. I don’t think I slept much for the rest of the night. It’s difficult to sleep and smile at the same time.
