Every year I sit and wonder why do we send Christmas cards? It’s a tradition that has always been lost on me. The holidays are so stressful, there’s so much to do that the thought of writing letters to people I don’t communicate with on a normal basis seems like an extra burden. I know, I know not a very Christian thought but one that’s probably true for most of us. I have friends that delight in the annual Christmas card venture. They can hardly wait to write to everyone and send pictures. Maybe I am a bit of a scrooge after all. I love everything else about Christmas, the beautiful music, the tree with brightly colored lights, the manger scenes and the hope in the atmosphere. I, at the same time, dread the idea I writing rote messages on card after card. Then the inevitable happens, I receive a card from a long lost friend and my heart swells with joy. All the dread disappears and the excitement of being in touch with those thought lost in this big world grows. As cards go out and cards come in I once again relish opening each one, reading the news letter from the year and reacquainting myself with loved ones and friends. It is said that if we do the same thing over and expect different results its considered insanity. I just call it Christmas card anxiety. Um I wonder if this could become the newest dis-ease of the month. We could do studies and provide grants to find out why people suffer from this horrendous malady. We could prescribe medications; offer rehab, 12 step programs. Oh well I think I’ll just get busy and send my cards early this year.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, there done it wasn’t so bad after all.
