It's our summer camping trip, if you want to call it that. Blow dryers, curling irons, make-up, a stainless steel refridgerator and a packed cupboard. Not to mention the DVD player "Now Playing", The Sound of Music.
I am not a camper, nor do I claim to be. But this is the life. All we have to do is pull in, hook-up and it's off to the land of rest and relaxation.
"How much longer, Dad?" I blurt out over the TV booming "So long, farewell...."
"Not too much farther, we will be there just in time for lunch, my dear." Dad hollars back!
So I slouch down in the bench to watch the rest of the movie.
About 20 minutes go by and I hear a clanging and clattering, Dad veers to the emergency lane to check out the noise. As he opens the hood, what looks like an attack of clouds rise instantly.
"Ut oh, now we are in trouble", I mumble, while taking a step toward the cab. It's about 100 degrees outside in the Texas sun. And with very few cars on the road, we might be here for some time.
"Dad, this is fixable, RIGHT?" I ask with optimism. "Well, looks to be just a hose. Stay inside and I will see what I can do." Dad is always so willing to make us all happy and comfortable.
Out the window I see a man in an old Chevy pull up. I think to myself, this can't be a good sign. What can a man in an old Chevy possibly know?
He pulls up next to Dad and says, "Need a hand there buddy?" Dad replies, "Not sure it can be fixed, looks like a hose has sprung a leak. You know much about these things." The man grinned and said. "Well, I may just have the thing you need buddy, but the problem is getting in that rig without getting scorched."
I glanced again at the mans car, he had it packed with camping gear. Tents, buckets, blankets and a little charcoal grill. In the middle of all his stuff, the head of a little boy peered over. I felt somewhat guilty for being in such luxury. But he looked content and satisfied.
Dad and the man hammered and toiled for alittle while. The hose was replaced in about 15 minutes. Dad offered the man some money, a cold bottle of water and some apples that Mom had cut up. He was gracious, and took some to the little boy in the car.
Dad asked where they were headed and the man replied. "My grandson and I are on our way to a Cub Scout meeting. His Momma passed away a year back, and Ma and I have taken on the responsibility of the boy. We enjoy our weekends away, got everything we need right here in the car. God has blessed me with a second chance at life and camping is wonderful way to be out in the middle of everything the good Lord created."
Dad smiled and patted he man on the shoulder. "Bless you my friend, for your help and for teaching your grandson about God."
Dad and the man shook hands and we both headed down the highway.....Camping.
