I lived on the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast for a number of years. While others ventured out, however, I often took in the boundlessness of the sea from the safety of the sandy shore. I was completely satisfied on that warm, pleasant beach. It occurs to me that life is much like that. God calls us to step out of our comfort. In fact, God needs us to step out.
Prayer by the Sea
Lord, help my selfish heart to open now,
to love unlovely ones that I have shunned.
Forgive my cringing flesh as I stand stunned,
and lift me into love.
Lord, show me how.
You stand on great vast seas of human need—
hands clutching, begging, grasping—
still you stay.
Giving of Your grace, the shore recedes
as You lift each
into Your safe embrace.
Lord, now I see You beckoning with Your Hand
for me to join You out upon that sea.
My weak heart faints
and falls into the sand,
And then I hear Your voice,
“Come, follow Me.”
The faith to leave my beach of unbelief
lies in Your strength alone
for I am frail.
Lord, help my struggling heart step out to sea,
and bravely walk on waves
as You prevail.
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If any one wishes to come after Me,
let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.’” Matthew 16:24 (NASB)
