Our son is ADD. Officially Tim was diagnosed as a first grader. His father and I knew he was ADD long before he was tested. His focus was so easily derailed. It was maddening. He wasn’t dumb, but he couldn’t concentrate on his work.

Imagine: The classroom is quiet. Everyone is taking a test. No one hears the clock’s tick, tick, tick. But in the quietness of the classroom, to Tim the clock’s tick-tock was as distracting as if it was London’s Big Ben’s bell.
It was a fairly common event in our household for Tim to be working on two or three different projects at the same time. In the middle of working on one, he’d switch to another. To this day, his father cannot understand how Tim could read a chapter in one book, a chapter in another book and yet again a chapter in a third book and keep the details assigned to the right book. I understand, because I do it.

As the parents of a child with ADD, life was a challenge. Some children respond well to the admonition, “Pay attention!” Although he was, without a doubt, a strong-willed child, he couldn’t “Pay attention!”
Tim is now an adult. He is painfully aware of the challenge ADD presents. But he’s grown up enough to realize the benefit of taking medication to help him concentrate. With the help of God and his wife’s love, he is now able to attend college classes. He is working toward getting his degree. His wife is wise enough to recognize behaviors that suggest he’s forgotten his medication and asks, “Have you taken your medicine?” The question only arises when it is clear to her that he hasn’t or it hasn’t take effect yet.
Is ADD a real or a concocted disorder? It will be debated for years, I’m sure. But having lived with it for years, I’m definitely inclined to agree it is real.
