Why is time so fickle? When you are doing something fun or interesting time flies, but when you are doing dull tasks like washing dishes or waiting at a doctor’s office time moves v e r y s l o w l y. I believe the difference is concentration. When the task engages your full mind you give no thought to the passing time. Conversations can be the same way. When I talk with an acquaintance with whom I have little in common, 10 minutes seems like forever, but when I talk with a good friend two hours gets away from us in a flash. If an hour (or even 10 minutes) seems like a long time for prayer it is because we haven’t moved from acquaintance with God to deep friendship.

Some of my best concentration tasks are bookkeeping, spreadsheets, talking to friends and reading. When I’m doing these I get lost in the task and may not even notice when someone speaks to me. Having a job that allows you to work in your interest and high concentration areas is a blessing. The days pass quickly and instead of looking at the clock a dozen times every morning wishing and waiting for lunch hour you will respond to a coworker’s, “Aren’t you going to lunch.” With “It can’t be that late already.”
