Twenty-five Years Ago

Yes, it’s coming! It’s coming!
I can hardly wait. . .
Her eyes will sparkle
When we walk through the door
We’ll say “Nana I love you.”
She’ll say, “I love you more”

It’s coming! It’s coming!
My cousins can hardly wait
To be laughing and splashing
Racing across the pool
But no diving
We all know the rules

It’s coming! It’s coming!
And we can hardly wait!
To eat all the food,
That our mommies will make:
Like hot-dogs, and hamburgers,
Watermelon, Coke-a-Cola,
And Sara Lee cake.
“Their eyes are bigger than their bellies”
I can still hear Nana say
Sure was a happy day

And after swimming and eating
Everyone’s will gather round to play
The Night of the Races
A really fun game
You get a wooden horse
And give him a number
Then place him behind the line
On the homemade track
Now you’re raring to go
The whistle will blow
You’ll start to jump up and down
Your heart begins to pound
You’re eager to see
What the numbers will be
Four or six or
Will it be seven or two?
It’s the roll of the dice
That dictates what your horse will do
Racing your horses
One step at a time
Laughing at the horses
Left behind the line
When suddenly
The next roll of the dice
Leaves your horse standing on ice
And we all know
That it can happen anytime
When your horse is first
Across the finish line
And you get the prize

A family reunion, year after year
Celebrated every Memorial Day
No-longer a tradition
Since Nana passed-away
Twenty-five years ago

The night of the races sounds like a fun time. Thanks for sharing.

Ohhh, so sad that the reunions ended beacuse Nana died. I liked the line with the Sara Lee cake-that was cute! I could see this playing out like a story! ^_^
