My Friend, Philosopher and Guide
Most of the families in India are shattered because of the frictions between the in-laws. Needless to mention the stories between the mother in law and the daughter in law. In my life I have seen thousands of newly wedded brides chased away from their husbands by demanding mothers and also mothers torn away from their sons and spend their life in tears. But I thank God for my exceptional mother in law who was my Friend, Philosopher and Guide till she breathed her last.
As a dear most friend she took my hands ands and accepted me into the house with the greatest affection of a mother. From that very moment she led me through the portals of a responsible married life with patience, love and prayerful guidance. Her trust in God was so great that every move she started was a complete surrender to the Divine Will. Even the mistakes I committed were pointed out only with the teachings from the Holy Bible which she loved and relied most in her life. She cared more about my health than hers. She came to my rescue whenever I was hesitating. She loved and treated me more affectionately than her own daughters. That gesture from their mother made my sisters in law also the most affectionate and successful women in the world!
I can never forget the first Christmas which made me taste her affection to the most. Christmas came just a few weeks after our marriage. Usually the new couples celebrate their first Christmas in the bride’s house. But due to unavoidable circumstances, my husband could not come to my house for the first Christmas. My mother in law took the initiative and convinced my parents to enjoy our first Christmas in my husband’s house along with all my in laws. No doubt it was a heavenly experience!
Together we prepared a lot of sweets. We decorated the house. We had a very beautiful crib! All these things were executed with the ideas of my mother in law. It is worth mentioning about the crib competition conducted in that parish that year.
A beautiful crib was made with the guidance and encouragement of my mother in law. She appreciated me at every step. A crib with the Divine baby, Mary, Joseph, shepherds, the three Magi and the cattle was arranged. A beautiful Rangoli was drawn in front of the crib with the words “Divinity in Unity.” My mother in law encouraged me to explain the meaning of Christmas in a beautiful way when the judges came. Christmas is an occasion of divine unity, which united all on the earth. The most educated Magi from three corners of the earth and the most ignorant and innocent people of Bethlehem plains united in enjoying the nativity with the warmth of the cattle! The judges were elated with my explanation and the arrangement of the crib which I could do without hesitation through my mother in law’s guidance. With all the blessings and encouragements I received from my mother in law, it was a fitting finale that I received the first prize in the crib contest! My mother in law had the divine hand to lead me to success in everything!
Though my mother-I have always considered her my own mother- is no more present physically on the earth, I am sure she is guiding me from heaven also! I always thank the Divine Providence which brought me to such a nice mother in law!
“My dear Mom, I promise you I will be always in your presence, and I can’t walk away from your path!”

I love this! Especially the touches of Indian culture in here-it makes it so much more real! Wonderful job-especially at the end where they spent Christmas together, what a great description of such a lovely memory. ^_^

Your entry shimmers with the tender love you hold for your mother-in-law and the unexpected gift of her considerate love for you. I can tell English is not your first language because of some of the word order and choices. Your overall writing flows smoothly and clearly, conveying a great depth of emotion.

What a wonderful accolade to your mother-in-law! What a wonderful insight into Christmas practices in India! I loved the picture you have painted in this story. I am enjoying getting to know you better with your writing. I shall put you in my tracking, so that I know when you have written a new piece. I do hope you will keep writing. (I have now read all of your stories)...By the way, I also had a wonderful mother-in-law, who was a comfort to me, as my own mother had passed on by the time I got married...Great story telling, Thresia...Keep writing....Helen
