I knew her even before I met her son. She is my Christian sister, my mentor, my friend. She is my very real Naomi and I am her Ruth.
For the years prior to marrying her son, I watched her at church and I sought to learn from her example. I admired her godly characteristics, wisdom and especially love in action. Then God blessed me by allowing me to become a part of her family and our relationship deepened.
Early in our marriage, she was patient with my young Christian immaturity. She missed spending time with her beloved son, but wisely encouraged him to “leave” his parents and “cleave” to me. She respectfully held her tongue when she disagreed with my first-time-mom child raising tactics. She loved me as if I were her own daughter.
She has been a support and encouragement throughout our marriage. She has helped us financially, but more importantly she has helped me spiritually. She has been my counselor during all my difficult circumstances and has pointed me to scripture and prayer as the only answer.
During the last 15 years I have witnessed her endure trials with grace and mercy; A heartbreaking prodigal child, persecution from her own siblings, the death of her mentally unstable mother and then years later, her alcoholic father. And now in the deepest valley of her life, she is suffering through the end of a 38 year marriage.
I am grieved of the circumstance, yet honored that my Naomi now needs me. So I pray that I have matured during my time as her daughter in law. At least just enough to offer her a glimpse of the example she has provided over the years: wisdom, patience, financial and spiritual support, respect, encouragement, counseling, scripture, prayer, grace, mercy and most of all, love.
So I offer my Naomi the words of her heavenly Father through her namesake, “Sit still my daughter, until you know how the matter turns out.” (Ruth 3:18a NKJ)
I love you Mary Lou.
