"Peek-a-boo, I see you!" laughed Momma. Baby hid his face again in his chubby hands. "Peek-a- boo, I see you! And guess what? It's time for night, night," she cooed.
Momma changed baby's diaper and put on his kitten paw-print pajamas. After prayers, she walked over to the faded blue rocker and sat on the torn flattened cushion. As Momma rocked, she stroked baby's corn-silk hair singing:
"I love my Little Bit a lot.
I love my Little Bit a lot.
I love my Little Bit a lot.
Oh Little Bit, a lot I love you.
It's time to go to sleep my Little Bit.
It's time to go to sleep my Little Bit.
It's time to go to sleep my Little Bit.
Oh Little Bit, it's time to sleep a little bit."
With a gentle brush of a kiss on his forehead, Momma put baby to bed. Rubbing the back of her neck, she sighed.
Momma washed behind Bubba's ears. "Bubba, there's enough dirt in here to plant a year's worth of spinach!" declared Momma. Bubba clapped his hands in the soapy water. "Momma, you're funny," he said.
Bubba and ducky went on a fishing trip to the great big ocean. When he was done the entire bathroom was dripping with water. "Okay, Bubba. Bed time," Momma said while wiping soap from her clothes.
Bubba put on his fire-engine red pajamas with the spotted puppy on the shirt. Walking over to the narrow bed, Momma pulled back the covers.
"Quack! Quack! Quack!" Bubba waddled right into bed. As Bubba settled under his Clifford-the-Big-Red-Dog blanket, Momma sat on the edge of the bed. After prayers, she stroked his curly hair singing:
"I love you, my special little boy,
You fill my heart with so much joy.
You run and jump and laugh all day,
Your hours are full of fun and play.
But now your day is finally done,
Sleep soundly my precious son.
Dream sweetly throughout the night,
Until the first rays of morning light."
With a gentle brush of a kiss on his nose, Momma arose from Bubba's bed. Stretching her arms toward the ceiling, she yawned.
"So he thought your haircut was cute?" giggled Momma. Sissy's grin was huge and her cheeks glowed. "Momma, he noticed me!" squealed Sissy while giving Momma a big hug. How do I cool a crush without crushing her? Momma thought.
"Okay, enough for now. It's time for bed. Is your homework done?" asked Momma while walking arm-in-arm with Sissy. They stopped at Sissy's bedroom door. "Let me know when you're in your pjs and I'll come in to say good-night."
"Uhm, Momma. I'm getting too big to be sung to every night. Can we say good night here? I promise to say my prayers," said a hopeful Sissy. Momma nodded her head slowly in agreement. She knew this night was inevitable.
"Good night, Sissy Sunshine!" Momma sang while giving Sissy a playful pat to the backside. Momma turned to walk down the hallway.
"Wait, Momma," Sissy said. "I love you."
With a gentle brush of a kiss on Sissy's cheek, Momma stood stroking her long blonde hair. Releasing her, Momma headed towards her own room. Cheeks wet, heart full, the weariness almost seemed to melt away.
After prayers, Momma read from her Bible. She loved the Psalms. His Words would bolster her courage throughout the lonely night. "Ever since Peter died, Lord, these moments have become invaluable to me. Thank you for your ever-present love and mercy."
Snuggling deep into her rose-petal comforter, Momma was soon snoring slightly. With a gentle brush of a kiss on her forehead, Father began singing His tender love song to His beloved child.
