I have always been grateful to have Friedreich's Ataxia (a form of muscular dystrophy). Don't misunderstand me -- there have been many times I have thought I can't live or deal with the disease. The losses of independence due to the disease are numerous and ongoing mixed in with quantities of pain and fatigue. The truth is I (alone) can't live or deal with Friedreich's Ataxia. I've seen other people try. They abuse drugs (prescribed medication and otherwise), alcohol, other people, and/or themselves. Never finding true independence -- probably because the Lord made us to be dependent on Him.
Deuteronomy 31: 8 (NIV) says, “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Also, Philippians 4:13 (NIV) says, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” Because Christ Jesus is the Lord and I have chosen to follow His example, I am not alone. And we (He and I, mostly Him) can and will live like this!
Having Friedreich's Ataxia has helped to remind me in several instances throughout my life that the Lord is with me, always. The Lord has given me salvation, grace, forgiveness, a hope, guidance through the Holy Spirit, love -- so many things that I feel a deep sense of gratitude and thankfulness. And so, I am grateful for my disease because it reminds me of whom I belong to and what He has done for me.
